>> san francisco police say they will give us arrest and citation totals. new at 11:00, a standoff ended in san jose. that's where police helped officers capture a wanted felon. paramedics took the suspect to a hospital. unclear if he was bitten by the police dog. police say the situation started in sunnyvale where undercover officers began following a man who led them to san jose. a man is in jail this evening accused of killing his girlfriend. 16-month-old daughter in redwood city. police received a call about a child not breathing at an apartment complex on mads on avenue. the girl died after being rushed to a hospital thursday afternoon. detectives arrested the man today. police say that he told them the child fell. the coroner performed an awe temperature see and det -- autopsy. san francisco 49ers coach says there was no fight between former linebacker smith and quarterback colin kaepernick

history was made today when kim chambers became the first woman to swim to the golden gate bridge. melanie woodrow met up with kim at san francisco yacht club and has the story of a record breaking journey. kimberly chambers the first woman to swim from fair lawn island to the golden gate bridge. >> i'm in shock. i wanted that honor. but, you know, it's up to mother nature. >> mother nature and sharks. kim who is from new zealand managing to elude them.

chambers says one of the biggest challenges keeping food down her 17 hour 12 minute journey and approximately 30 mile swim. the temperatures in the low 60s. and her mom, rooting for her the entire time. i knew what she was going through. and it's hard not to reach out. because it's my daughter. but i just kept, i was just amazed at how he had such mental fortitude. and simon dominguez attempted the same swim last week. not finishing my swim. swims for schar tee and to inspire little girls. to dream big. even if it scares you because, you don't know what is going to happen. you might surprise yourself.

good evening. i'm matt keller. in to night's headlines. an ambulance took a man to the hospital after a five hour standoff with san jose police. he was hiding in the atting it home. police dogs helped capture the man. in redwood, a man is in jail accused of killing his girlfriend's 16-month-old daughter. the girl died thursday afternoon. he told paramedics the girl fell off the table. an autopsy deter mmined she was killed. the last day of the outside lands music festival in san francisco. sold out event so popular some jumped the fns to get ence. cited fantastic, after he was trying to sell artists wristban wristbands. he was not allowed to pr forerf.

an american success story. the linking of the east and west

by railroad in the 160s. many of the people who built it weren't americans, but chinese. and now there is an effort under way to tell their story. abc 7 news anchor dan ashley has the details. it has been more than 146 years since this famous photo was taken. it celebrated linking of the central pacific and union pacific railroads with the golden spike in utah. and recovering the history of the 10,000 chinese who came to america. their labor was absolutely key to the railroad being completed. >> we know very little about who they were. their names even. what they experienced. how they were recruited. how they lived, worked, died on the railroad. what happened subsequently. >> their story is hard to tell.

they left no written record themselves. there is not a single letter or journal or even remittance envelope written in the hand of one of the workers who has yet surfaced in the u.s. or china. >> generations of racism and discrimination left the story of the chinese laborers untold until now. >> this is an attempt to j kaede people about the transcontinental that joined the country. that it provided, a highway. if you will. between east and west. but it was also a gateway to the orient. >> the chinese railroad workers in north america project is piecing together what really happened. so far isn't a lot to go on. just family stories, old photos and drawings. and documents from the railroad's builders. stanford university founder, leiland stanford was among them. >> i would love to see any evidence of a campfire. >> researchers are working with the historical society of america. this video shows archaeologists sifting through the past for
